About MoneyInAustria.com
MoneyInAustria is an independent, English-language guide to personal finance in Austria, written for international residents.
Moving to Austria means dealing with a financial system built for German speakers: capital gains tax on foreign investments, tax returns, social insurance, pensions and banking, often with official guidance available only in German. Most English-language information is either years out of date or written to sell you a product. We built MoneyInAustria to fix that.
Who we write for
Our readers are people who have moved to Austria, or are about to: employees, freelancers, retirees and families who want to understand how their money is taxed and managed here. We pay particular attention to the questions that come with arriving from abroad, such as what happens to your existing investments, pensions and savings, and how to report them correctly.
What we cover
- Income tax and filing your return
- Investing and capital gains tax (KESt), including foreign brokers and funds
- Pensions and retirement
- Banking, insurance and everyday money
How we work
Every article is researched from primary sources: Austrian legislation, Federal Ministry of Finance (BMF) guidance and official publications. We link to those sources so you can check them yourself.
Tax rules and thresholds change often, so each article shows when its figures were last verified, and our [Figures changelog] records every update and correction. If you spot something wrong or out of date, email us at admin@moneyinaustria.com and we’ll fix it.

Independent by design
MoneyInAustria isn’t owned by, or affiliated with, any bank, broker, insurer, adviser or government body. We don’t accept payment for coverage. Some articles contain affiliate links, which earn us a commission at no cost to you; they never decide what we write or recommend.
What we are not
We publish general information, not personal advice. We’re not tax advisers (Steuerberater) or licensed financial advisers, and our articles can’t take account of your individual situation. For decisions that depend on your circumstances, speak to a qualified professional. See our Disclaimer.
